Clutter is not one size fits all

cluttered table

Over the years, people have come to me absolutely frustrated with their partner/friend/family member whose home is full of stuff. Why can't they just get it together? How can they live like this? They will ask, hoping I have an easy answer.

Except, it's never a cut-and-dry thing. There is no one answer to why people struggle with too much stuff, aren't able to declutter, or don't seem to mind moving stuff around to sit down. Every single person is different and has a different story about how they got to where they are. The story of someone's clutter is not one size fits all, just as decluttering is not one size fits all.

And the thing is, if you are on the receiving end of this frustration, it can feel like you are being judged.

So here are some thoughts:

If you have a family member/friend/partner with a house full of stuff, and it is frustrating, what if you looked at it differently? Instead of trying to "fix" it, what if you asked them about it with an open mind? There are a million reasons why they have a home that has clutter and their reason might surprise you.

If you are on the receiving end and feel judged, just know that you are not wrong for having stuff. You just have stuff, and life has happened. Most of the people (well, hopefully all) are coming to you with the best of intentions. This is a good time to create boundaries around what you are willing to tolerate regarding what people say about your home and life.

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
