Containers! Now I can declutter! ...wait, what?

Updated: Aug 8

plastic containers in a store

This is the time of year when I see a lot of sales for containers. Everyone who has a New Year resolution to declutter is a target for these sales.

Sure, if you have a ton of holiday decorations and no way to store them efficiently, this is a great sale.

But if you are buying the containers with the best intentions of having a place to keep all of your yarn for a project you stopped and might start up again or all of so and so's toys from 5 years ago or... (you get the idea). You are not doing yourself any favors. I have been there and so have many of my clients and I can tell you that 5-10-15 years from now when you are ready to move, you'll look at those boxes, wonder what's in them, and have to declutter them anyway. Or worse, you won't look at them and just move them from home to home.

So what's a solution? Instead of running to the sale, how about if you decide to declutter the thing you were thinking of putting in a container?

Here are some simple questions to ask:

If I put this in a container, how likely will I be to go back to it later and use it?

If I keep this item, how will it help my life?

Is this something I can buy easily if I need it later?

How often will I need this?

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
