How to keep the clutter from coming back

Let's say you've been decluttering for a while now and you notice the issue isn't that you don't know what to do anymore --- it's that the clutter comes back.

This doesn't mean you aren't doing a good enough job decluttering.

The work now needs to shift. You will need to find ways to keep the clutter from coming back.

Unfortunately, it's not as straightforward as it could be. Sure, you could just not buy anything anymore and ban anything new from coming in. But is that a life you want to have?

Here are some thoughts on how to keep clutter from coming back:

  1. Observe. Watch how you and your family shop, how you get things (gifts, hand-me-downs), and any other ways new items come into your home.

  2. Pick one thing to shift. It could be a tiny shift such as you wait a week before you buy something or you ask yourself why you want to buy the item before you buy it. Or it can be a bigger shift like asking family/friends to only give you presents that are gift cards or donations to a charity. But making a big change by shifting everything might be too much of a culture shock for you and your family. So just stick with one and see how it feels.

You can also ask yourself some of the questions I put in this blog post:
