Let's talk about storage clutter

Updated: Jul 29

We've gone over surface clutter and behind-the-door clutter. If you've missed those posts, you can find them here (surface) and here (behind the door). The third type of clutter to discuss is storage clutter. Storage clutter is exactly as you would expect - any clutter you have in your storage areas.

Storage is useful. Especially if you don't have a lot of space in the main areas of the home and have stuff that you use only once or twice a year (holiday decorations, etc.) however, storage can quickly become cluttered if it's not maintained and sorted regularly.

And here's the thing: when we have storage available, it's very easy to "just put it in storage" instead of deciding whether we want to keep it. So a lot of items in storage are items we didn't want to deal with or think about in the first place.

There are also a bunch of items in storage that we put in there with the absolute best of intentions. We thought we needed to keep it (or were told we needed to keep it) so we did and we put it in storage because there was nowhere else to put it.

And I can't forget that there are usually items in storage that are there because of the sentimental meaning they have for us.

These three types of items in storage make this part of decluttering more emotional than surface and behind-the-door clutter. Next week I'll go over some ways to handle storage clutter.

I hope this was helpful for you on your decluttering journey.
