The other day I was asked: "Is decluttering the same thing as living as a minimalist?" It's such a good question because there is definitely confusion about the two. Since I'm going to clear the confusion on those two, it is best to bring in the difference between a Declutter Coach and a Professional Organizer as well.

So let's look at minimalism first. Minimalism is a lifestyle. The philosophy is that when you eliminate all of the excess, you make room for your life and what matters most to you. There are no rules to minimalism but most people who are minimalist speakers agree that you only live with what you absolutely love and need. The benefits to a minimalist lifestyle - positive environmental impact and you live/shop mindfully.

Decluttering is the action of clearing away the clutter. Decluttering can mean letting go of all the surface level stuff in your home or office. It can also mean clearing out storage units, basements, garages and attics.

If you have been overwhelmed with clutter and need some help with it but are not sure what would work best for you. Minimalism is an option or you could hire a Professional Organizer or Declutter Coach.

A Professional Organizer is a person whose main goal is to help you have an organized home or office that runs smoothly. A good professional organizer will listen to you and your family's needs to create systems/organization around your life. They will declutter your home to help set up the flow of the home however, the decluttering is usually surface-level items. The benefits to a professional organizer - your home works smoothly and efficiently.

Declutter Coaches go deeper with decluttering. They help you sort through your stuff, work through emotional blocks that you might have over items, and ask you questions so you figure out exactly what is important to you. There may be some organizational help involved but it's not the main focus. The benefits of a Declutter Coach - getting your home from a crowded and cramped feeling to one that feels calm and spacious.
