What is your clutter costing you? (part 2)

messy kitchen counter

Last week I asked you questions so you could determine how much money your excess stuff was costing you. You can find that blog post here.

The truth is, that clutter robs us of more than money. There is a huge emotional drain from clutter and so much time is lost over the chaos in our home.

Our emotions take a toll every time:

  • You are in a hurry and can't find what you are looking for

  • You come home and feel stressed because of the piles everywhere

  • You worry about what other people will think of your home

  • You see ads, magazines, television shows, etc. of beautiful homes and you feel your home is not good enough

  • You feel you need to spend a weekend decluttering but are so overwhelmed you sit there for the weekend and then feel horrible about it later - or- you do declutter for an hour or two and then get exhausted/overwhelmed/distracted and it doesn't get finished as much as you would like so you feel horrible about it later

  • You argue with family members about all the stuff

  • You don't want to deal with what you have so you keep shoveling it into boxes, bags, and storage units and even though it's out of sight, you still know it's there.

  • The list goes on

And then there is time. The amount of time we spend decluttering, looking for things, moving piles from one spot to another, and putting items from one storage container to another is crazy. You can add it up but to save you time I'll tell you it's more than you probably realize. And that's unfortunate. I follow Jodi Wellman on Instagram. Jodi is the author of "You Only Die Once" and her Instagram name is "FourThousandMondays". Her main thing, if the titles don't give it away, is that we only have 4,000 Mondays in our lifetime, and questions if we are spending that time doing what we want.

So I ask you, is dealing with all the excess stuff worth the money, emotional stress, and time? Go ahead and think about it. Let it sit for a few days. What matters to you? What do you want?

And if it's less stuff there are solutions and you don't have to go at it alone.

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
