When you don't know where to start decluttering

Updated: Aug 27

plants and other items on table

The biggest issue people come to me with is - they don't know where to start.

When your home is cluttered, it's hard to even think of how to clear up the mountain of stuff let alone take the first step. So let's dig in...

It will be easier to understand this when you see it as two types of clutter: basic and emotional/emotionally charged.

Basic clutter is everything you see out (on counters, etc.) and everything that is very easy to declutter (ex: towels or socks). For these items, you can ask yourself a few simple questions and figure out if you want to keep it or not:

  • Do I need this?

  • Do I use this?

  • Do I like this?

Emotional clutter is a little trickier. It's the stuff you take from place to place without realizing it. It's what you hold onto for various reasons (sentimental, guilt, etc) but they aren't always the best reasons. These are the items that you most likely get stuck on. The simple questions don't apply to you because you might not need, use, or even like an item but you might feel like holding on anyway.

If you have a home full of clutter, the best place to start is the surface clutter. And of the surface clutter, the best place to start is in a room you are in every day such as a living room, family room, or dining room.

Two things to know -

  1. Just do a little at a time (15 minutes is enough) every day

  2. Don't declutter other people's stuff - focus on your clutter first

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
