Why asking if something sparks joy is not enough

items by door for donation

Before you start thinking this will be a rant about Marie Kondo, it is not. I completely respect her and the work she does. She's helped so many people create a home they feel comfortable and calm in and that is what matters.

However, decluttering is not one size fits all. For some people, asking if something sparks joy is not enough. You can ask if you need it, if you use it, if it makes you happy; but those questions don't go deeper into why you are holding onto something.

They don't look into:

  • the story you have for the item - did you get it the day you met your best friend?

  • the feelings you have around it - does it make you feel guilty to let it go?

  • whether or not it's authentic to you - or is it from who you were in the past?

Look, not everything needs to be sorted on this deeper level - a lot of items can be quickly checked to see if it's something you want or need. But if there are items you don't know what to do with, maybe it's time to take a deeper dive into WHY you are holding onto it to determine if you want to keep it or let it go.

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
