Why getting rid of everything you own doesn't make you happier

clock and plant

In the world of clearing out your stuff, some people feel like they need to clear away everything (or just about everything) to be happier. If you watch any of the documentaries on minimalism or read the blogs, you will hear people who have let go of a ton of stuff say their lives have changed for the better. And they are not wrong.

So does this mean I'm saying let go of all of your stuff and move into a yurt?

Because that is how it sounds to so many people. And the answer is: No, not unless that's what feels aligned with who you are.

Here's the thing: it wasn't just about decluttering the stuff. (Yeah, I know... the declutter coach just said that.) It was the process of decluttering that helped them look at their stuff AND their lives. It let them see how they were not living the life they wanted. They were not living in authenticity. As they decluttered, they examined everything, saw what was important to them, and let go of what wasn't.

So the next time you feel like to be happy, you need to start the process of getting rid of everything, check in with yourself, and see if something feels out of alignment with who you are. That's the first step to finding your authenticity.

I hope this helps you on your decluttering journey.
